Are Your Stress Management Strategies
Causing You More Harm Than Good?

When you are stressed out and frazzled beyond recognition, how do you cope?

Do you...

  • dream of escaping the stress of life by going on vacation?
  • go for a walk?
  • meditate?
  • listen to soothing music?
  • read?
  • take a hot bath?

The Myth of Relaxation...

If you answered yes to any of the items listed above, you are one of the millions of people who believe that relaxation is the solution to your chronic stress. While relaxation is good for you and should have its place in your life, it alone is NOT the answer to chronic stress.

As wonderful as it may feel to kick back and relax, what is even better is to increase your resiliency. When you are more resilient, you are able to bounce back more quickly from the stresses you face day to day. The danger of relying solely on stolen moments of relaxation is the long term build up of the effects of chronic stress.

What you need is an internal shift in your emotional state.

Your emotions drive your physiology and affect which hormones and biochemicals are released into your body's systems. When you experience emotions like frustration, worry, fear, and doubt, your physical body and mental functions operate inefficiently, what we call "cortical inhibition".

As you experience these stressful emotions, your heart sends erratic signals to your brain. Your brain responds to these erratic signals by sending mixed messages to the rest of your body. The result is your body doesn't know whether it is supposed to be speeding up (sympathetic nervous activity) or slowing down (parasympathetic nervous activity).

This can be likened somewhat to driving your car with your foot on the brake and gas at the same time. How long do you think it would take for your car to wear out if you drove that way every day?

How long do you think it takes to wear your body down when it is constantly receiving mixed signals of speed up and slow down? Did you know that your autonomic nervous system controls about 90% of your bodily functions? Wouldn't you like for that 90% to be working at peak performance?

Why do smart people say stupid things when they get emotionally upset?

When your body is in the grip of a stress response, your thinking can get muddled, your communication skills seem to fly out the window, and you lose your ability to discriminate appropriate behavior.

On the flip side, when you are experiencing a positive emotion your body is operating at optimal levels, physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. You are able to think more clearly, problem solve more efficiently, communicate better, set goals, plan for future events, and so forth. Not to mention that your physical body is stronger and healthier.

Here's the bottom line.

If what you were already doing was working, you would not be on this page right now. The solution to your chronic stress is not escaping or removing yourself from the stressful situations, nor is it exercising at the gym (these are good things to do, just not enough in and of themselves to defeat chronic stress).

Let's face it, life is stressful and there is just no getting around it unless you plan to move to the top of an isolated mountain.

Your solution then lies not in escaping, but in your ability to master your emotions and minimize the impact of life's stressors while LIVING your life.

As one of my coaching clients, I teach you how to use simple, research proven tools and techniques to stop the stress response within seconds--in the moment, as you are living your life.
